Professor John Black is Director of the Botany Bay Studies Unit and Emeritus Professor of Transport Engineering at the University of New South Wales , Sydney, Australia where he was Foundation Professor of Transport Engineering from 1984 to 1999. He is also an Adjunct Professor at the University of Sydney in the Planning Research Centre, Faculty of Architecture. Professor Black has acted for over 30 years as high-level consultant to international agencies, such as the World Bank and the United Nations Development Program, Australian Commonwealth, State and Local Government agencies, and to the private sector and community groups. Professor Black is on the International Steering Committee of the World Conference on Transport Research Society (WCTRS) , and was a founder member of its Air Transport Research Group in 1995 (now Air Transport Research Society) and is a member of its international network committee .
His specific aviation industry experience includes:
- Policy Advisory Committee to the development of noise and air quality management plans at Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport
- Elected Chair of the Community Advisory Committee in the development of noise and air quality management plans at Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport, as part of the statutory approval for the construction and operation of a third runway at Sydney Airport.
- Development and implementation of airport planning and management course (with Professor Richard de Neufville, MIT, Cambridge, Mass.) for the airport managers in the newly-created Australian Federal Airports Corporation (1991) .
- Aircraft noise and impacts on community quality of life, stress and hypertension
- Study of aircraft engine emissions and vehicle engine emissions at airports and ground access to airports.
- Economic impact of airports with particular reference to Sydney Airport
